Local Fire Department One Of Three Selected To Present Arson Awareness Program

The Lawrenceburg Fire Department is one of only three selected throughout the State of Tennessee to present an upcoming arson awareness program during National Arson Awareness Week.

Arson Awareness Week will be observed May 5 through May 11. The goal of this year’s observance is to make the public more aware of strategies to combat arsons in their neighborhoods.

These include implementing neighborhood cleanups and improving internal and external security for homes and abandoned properties.

Lawrenceburg Fire Chief Jay Moore explains, “We are hosting the event to help community members reduce the occurrence of arson and its devastating effects by making residents aware of measures they can take to protect their homes and community.”

The National Fire Protection Association reports that in 2010 there were an estimated 46,300 structure fires intentionally set in the United States. They report that those fires resulted in 390 deaths, 1,340 injuries, and $1.2 billion in property damage.

Statistics compiled through the Federal Bureau of Investigation show that during that time period law enforcement agencies across the country received reports of 43,412 arson fires.

About one third of the fires were set at residential or single occupancy structures.

The Lawrenceburg Fire Department will host the arson awareness program between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at Walmart Super Center, 2130 North Locust Avenue.

In addition to the fire department, the event is being presented through the Tennessee State Fire Marshall’s Office Bomb and Arson Section, Tennessee Agriculture Crime Unit, Lawrence County Fire and Rescue, and local law enforcement partners.
